Health Call Undernutrition Service

The latest development from the FoU team is the award winning Health Call Undernutrition Service, an innovative way of using technology to monitor patients prescribed oral nutritional supplements (ONS) or those identified at risk of undernutrition.

Patients receive a weekly automated phone call that asks three questions to determine, current weight, appetite and compliance with ONS - ‘MUST’ is then calculated from the information provided. Clinicians receive an emailed alert if any of the information provided is outside pre-determined parameters or they fail to respond to the call. A web based system has also been developed. This enables clinicians to respond to the changing needs of their patients in a more timely manner.

Initial evaluation of Health Call has been extremely positive to both patients, clinicians and the dietetic service as a whole. We have seen a reduction in ONS spending and in clinical hours therefore, increasing the capacity of the service. More importantly is that patients have seen far greater benefits and report that it has been ‘life changing’ and they feel more supported and cared for as a result of a weekly automated call.

The team: Catherine McShane (specialist Dietitian), Rachael Masters (highly specialist Dietitian), Ian Dove (service transformation facilitator), Jeannie Hardy (programme manager telehealth) and Richard Quine (inHealthcare technology)
